What is the difference between a core-type and a shell-type transformer?

Core-type

The core is a simple frame (usually a 3-limb) and the coils are placed on the limbs, with the flux returning through the yokes. It is the most common and easiest to build, test and repair.

Shell-type

The core wraps around the windings, forming a shell, so the windings are enclosed and more mechanically robust; the flux distribution is better controlled, giving lower leakage and good overload performance.

Choosing

Core-type is standard for distribution and most power transformers; shell-type is used for large, high-reliability and some specialty units where the better short-circuit and impulse performance matters.
