What Is a Generator Step-Up (GSU) Transformer?
Its role
Generators produce at a relatively low voltage; to transmit power at high voltage and low current, the GSU steps the voltage up. It is the biggest and most critical transformer at a power station.
Design considerations
GSUs are rated for the generator MVA and voltage class, handle a wide load range, and often need on-load tap-changers to regulate the station voltage. They may feed a unit or station transformer for auxiliary power.
Why it matters
Because a GSU is at the heart of generation, its reliability and condition monitoring (DGA, temperature, tap-changer) are critical to plant availability.
