How to Buy a Power Transformer: A Checklist
Start with the specification
Define MVA, primary and secondary kV, tapping range and step, %Z, vector group, frequency, cooling (ONAN/ONAF/OFAF), temperature rise, impedance and losses, and any special duty (e.g. converter, reactor, furnace).
Design and standards
Choose the governing standard (IEC 60076 or IEEE C57) and add the site-specific requirements: altitude derating, ambient temperature, contamination, noise, and any local grid code.
Quality and acceptances
Request the type-test certificates, routine-test report, and the QA/QC plan. Decide the acceptance tests you want witnessed and the criteria for pass/fail against the specification.
Total cost of ownership
Compare not only price but losses (no-load and load, capitalised over the life), lead time, spares, warranty, and the suppliers delivery record. A slightly cheaper unit with higher losses can cost more over 30 years.
