How Do You Parallel (Reinforce) Two Transformers?
The requirements
Same vector group and phase sequence so the voltages are in phase; same (or near) ratio; and matching impedance within close limits so the load divides correctly. Different impedances cause one unit to over- or under-load.
How load shares
With equal ratios the load divides inversely with the impedance; with unequal impedance, the lower impedance unit carries more. Circulating current can also flow if ratios or impedances differ.
Why rely on it
Paralleling lets you add capacity without replacing a unit and provides redundancy. You must verify the vector group, ratio and impedance before closing the second transformer into service.
