What is the difference between a three-phase and single-phase transformer?

Three-phase

One unit (or a three-unit bank) converts three-phase power with a more compact, economical core. It supplies motors, industrial plants and the grid.

Single-phase

One winding pair steps a single-phase supply (e.g. to 230/400 V for households or light commercial). Used for distribution, single-phase loads and reference applications.

Banking single-phase units

Three single-phase units can be connected (banked) to form a three-phase transformer, useful for spares and for very large units where transporting a single three-phase unit is impractical.
