How Is a Transformer Core Built?
Quick answer — A transformer core is built from grain-oriented electrical steel strip, cut into mitred, stepped laminations and stacked (or wound) to form the magnetic circuit with a specified cross-section and step. The laminations are insulated from each other, clamped and the flux density and losses kept within design. The step (or build) and the mitre increase performance.
How is a transformer core built and stepped?
Cutting
The grain-oriented steel strip is cut (guillotined or lasered) into core plates with mitred corners so the flux aligns with the grain direction and the yoke joints are tight.
Building / stacking
The plates are stacked (or wound into a loop for a wound core) with a stepped cross-section to fill the coil-window area, with the laminations insulated from each other to limit eddy currents.
Clamping and finishing
The core is clamped, the yoke and frames fitted, and the unit is finished so the flux density, losses and noise meet the design. The step count and plate width balance loss against filling the window.
