How often should transformer oil be tested (DGA)?

Baseline and routine

A baseline DGA is taken at commissioning, then routine samples on a scheduled interval (e.g. annually for a large unit, less often for a small one).

Increasing frequency

If the DGA trend rises or a fault is suspected, the interval is shortened or online monitoring added, and a close watch kept on the rate.

Why the interval matters

A too-long interval can miss a fast-developing fault; a too-short one is costly. The interval follows the age, criticality and the trend.
