The reaction

Oxygen and heat oxidise the oil, producing acids, peroxides, sludge and varnish. Water and metal catalyze the reaction.

Its effect

Acids and sludge lower the dielectric strength, wet and age the paper, and can form deposits; it is the main oil-aging mechanism.
