It strips the acids, sludge, varnish and oxidation products that accumulate with aging, restoring the oil quality.

The process

The oil is passed through a clay/earth reactor (or a regeneration column) that adsorbs the polar products, often followed by filtration, degassing and re-inhibition with an antioxidant.

When to do it

When the acidity, BDV, colour or sludge indicate aging, regeneration restores the oil; combined with drying and DGA it can extend the transformer life.
