Can You Overload a Transformer? (Loading Guide)
Quick answer — A transformer can be safely loaded above its nameplate rating only within defined thermal limits and for limited periods, because the winding hottest-spot temperature is the binding constraint. The loading guide (IEC 60076-7) gives allowed overloads for normal and emergency conditions based on the initial load, ambient temperature, insulation class and type of duty. Each 6-10 K over the design temperature roughly halves the insulation life.

The winding hottest-spot temperature limits the load. Exceeding the design temperature rise accelerates insulation aging and risks moisture release or a failure.
Normal vs emergency loading
The loading guide allows certain overloads for normal daily and cyclic duty, and higher ones for emergencies, balanced against the aging and the condition of the cooling and oil.
Practical rule
Do not overload without checking the loading guide, the design, the oil/winding temperature and whether the fans/pumps are running. Trending the hottest-spot temperature is the safe way to decide.
