What is a pressure relief device on a transformer?

What it does

It vents the tank when the internal pressure exceeds a set limit, releasing the gas/oil and preventing a tank rupture. It is fitted on the tank, often near the conservator and the top of the tank.

When it operates

A serious internal fault (e.g. an arc or a short) can generate gas and raise the pressure rapidly; the PRD opens to relieve it. A pressure spike from a blocked outlet, or a ruptured diaphragm, can also trigger it.

After operation

The PRD is reset (or replaced), the fault that caused the pressure rise is investigated, and the unit is inspected and tested before being returned to service.
