How Are Transformer Windings Formed and Shaped?
Quick answer — A winding is formed by winding the insulated conductor on a former (mandrel) in layers or discs, with the correct tension, the spacing and the insulation, so the turns are even and the winding is tight. After winding, it is clamped, the shape held by the insulation and the spacers, and dried and impregnated. The winding geometry and the clamping determine the insulation and the short-circuit strength.

The winding process
The conductor (round, rectangular, foil or CTC) is wound on a former with the tension, the turns per layer/disc and the insulation set by the design.
Holding the shape
Spacers, the insulation and the clamping hold the winding shape and the cooling ducts, and the clamping resists the short-circuit forces.
Drying and finishing
The formed winding is dried to remove moisture and, for dry-type, impregnated; then it is assembled into the core and the tank.
