Validation example. Inputs: 1,000 MVA at 21 kV and at 400 kV; a 140 MVA load shared by two 100 MVA transformers, each at 12.5% impedance, both in service. Expected: 27,493 A at 21 kV, 1,443 A at 400 kV, and 70 MVA on each transformer. References: IEC 60076-1 three-phase current I = S / (√3 · U). Equal percent impedance splits the load in proportion to rating, so each unit carries half of 140 MVA. Illustrative educational power-system configuration. Actual voltage levels, vector groups, and transformer arrangements vary by country and utility.

The Transformer Grid Journey — Engineering Architecture

Electrical power is generated at moderate voltage, stepped up to extra-high voltage (EHV) for bulk transmission to minimize current and I²R losses, and then progressively stepped down across regional, primary, and local distribution transformers for end-user safety and equipment compatibility.

Grid Transformation Hierarchy (Educational Scenario)

Stage Transformer Type Voltage (In → Out) Vector Group Primary Role
1. Generation Synchronous Generator — → 21.0 kV Star, low-resistance NGR Bulk power generation bounded by stator winding dielectric insulation.
2. GSU Step-Up Generator Step-Up (GSU) 21.0 kV → 400.0 kV YNd1 Steps voltage up 19.05x, dropping current by 19.05x and slashing I²R losses by ~362.8x (illustrative equal-R basis).
3. EHV Grid 400 kV Transmission Lines 400.0 kV → 400.0 kV Quad-bundle Long-distance bulk electrical energy transmission.
4. Interconnecting Autotransformer 400.0 kV → 220.0 kV YNauto0+d Shares common winding turns for high efficiency and compact footprint.
5. Regional Grid 220 kV Subtransmission 220.0 kV → 220.0 kV Twin-bundle Transfers bulk power from interconnector hubs to regional centers.
6. Step-Down Substation Main Grid Power Transformer 220.0 kV → 132.0 kV YNyn0+d Steps transmission down from 220 kV regional network to 132 kV subtransmission level.
7. Primary Substation Dual Power Transformers (T1/T2) 132.0 kV → 33.0 kV YNd11 Subtransmission to primary distribution with active OLTC regulation and N-1 redundancy. HV is star-earthed; the 33 kV delta is earthed through an earthing transformer.
8. Distribution Substation MV Distribution Transformer 33.0 kV → 11.0 kV Dyn11 Steps primary 33 kV distribution down to 11 kV municipal feeders and ring mains.
9. Local Distribution Cast-Resin / Oil Distribution 11.0 kV → 0.415 kV / 240 V Dyn11 Final step-down to safe three-phase (415 V) and single-phase (240 V) consumer supply.
10. Consumer Load End Consumers 0.415 kV / 240 V TN-C-S / TN-S Industrial manufacturing, data centers, commercial buildings, and domestic loads.
