Lessons From Transformer Transportation Damage
Why a transformer can be mechanically sound at the factory and damaged on arrival โ and what to check before energising.
A power transformer sustains the highest mechanical shock of its life in transit, not in service. The design is protected against internal forces but not against a hard landing, an excessive tilt or a shock through the tank wall.
The first line of defence is a transport recorder: a shock/impact recorder g-card mounted before dispatch and read on arrival. Exceeding the manufacturer's allowed g-value is the trigger for a more thorough examination before the unit is accepted.
A tilt beyond the design limit can lift the core, shift the clamping or crack an insulator. So can a single high-g shock during a rail hump or a ship lift.
On arrival, before energising: check the recorder, the pressure (a good vacuum/nitrogen blanket may have been lost), the oil level and the integrity of the bushings and accessories. An SFRA (sweep frequency response analysis) versus the factory fingerprint is the most sensitive check for a displaced core or winding.
If the recorder shows an exceedance, do not energise until the investigation is complete โ a minor transit event that is investigated rarely becomes a failure, but an ignored one is the classic undetected-damage case.
