Frequently asked
Mineral oil is the traditional, low-cost insulating liquid; natural and synthetic esters are biodegradable with higher fire points, used where fire safety and environmental risk matter.
It accommodates the oil volume change with temperature and, with a dehydrating breather, keeps moisture out of the sealed transformer.
Water and dissolved gases lower the dielectric strength and accelerate aging, so oil is tested (DGA, moisture, acidity, breakdown voltage) for condition.
