Oman signed 10 agreements worth an expected RO15m ($39m) on 12 Aug to localise the manufacture of key electrical transformer components used in transmission and distribution projects. Signed under the Authority for Public Services Regulation in cooperation with Muscat-headquartered Voltamp Energy, they cover SEVEN new factories making EIGHT essential transformer components, plus two existing factories adding lines for a further two components. Four local SMEs and six local/international companies are involved — Al-Mahri Industrial Enterprises, Al-Maha Ideal Solutions and United Engineering Services among them. Total proposed area 34,000 sqm; commercial production from 2027. About 70 Omani transmission projects are due in service 2026–30. This is the single most supplier-relevant GCC item of the month: a state-backed programme to build a transformer-component supply chain next door, explicitly aimed at cutting import reliance.
Saudi Power Procurement Company pushed the submission deadline for the four Round-7 solar PV IPPs — 1,400 MW Tabjal 2 (Al-Jouf), 600 MW Mawqqaq (Hail), 600 MW Tathleeth (Aseer) and 500 MW South Al-Ula (Medina) — from 30 Aug to 13 Sep 2026. The 1,300 MW Bilgah and 900 MW Shagra wind IPPs close 14 Sep. Round 7 totals 5,300 MW; 16 developers qualified as managing-and-technical members on the solar side and 13 on wind. Every one of these plants pulls GSU step-up transformers, collector substations and a 380 kV grid connection roughly 12–18 months after financial close.
Saudi Energy (formerly Saudi Electricity Company) signed an agreement with Expo 2030 Riyadh Company to build a dedicated electricity supply system for the Expo site. Scope covers construction of a main supply station at 380/132 kV (BSP) and three primary transformation substations at 132/13.8 kV, plus the associated electrical infrastructure connecting the site to the national grid. The work is split between Al-Babtain Contracting, Haif Company, Alfanar and Trading & Development Partnership (TDP). Permanent Expo supply is being developed around a planned ~400 MW capacity; the event runs 1 Oct 2030 to 31 Mar 2031. Four separate KSA primary-transformer, GIS and accessory scopes entering execution inside one programme — and all four contractors are established, supplier-addressable substation builders.
The Saudi Council of Ministers approved a revised GTPL, announced by the Ministry of Finance on 5 Aug. Key changes for suppliers: government entities may increase existing contract items by up to 20% of contract value (contractor consent required above 10%); bid-opening and bid-examination committees merge into a single committee; the direct-procurement ceiling rises from SR100,000 to SR1m ($267,000); the post-award standstill drops from five working days to three; maximum delay penalties fall from 20% to 15% of contract value; and the final-guarantee exemption threshold rises from SR100,000 to SR300,000. A new framework covers industrial localisation and knowledge transfer, with rules to be issued jointly with the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority, and entities holding unpaid contractor claims cannot make new awards. Directly relevant to how suppliers and their KSA partners price, vary and secure substation and insulation supply scopes from here.
MEED’s power & water editor argues that completion of construction at Neom Green Hydrogen — now moving into commissioning ahead of a 2027 COD — will give lenders and developers the first real operating, cost and reliability data for a gigascale green-H₂ plant, which matters most for the projects still behind it in development. The named follow-on is Acwa Power’s Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub, targeting 2.5 million tonnes a year of green ammonia with commercial operations in 2030; Germany’s EnBW has joined as co-developer and minority investor and Japan’s Itochu as co-developer, investor and offtaker. Yanbu still has to clear development and financing before construction — which is precisely when its electrolyser, rectifier-transformer and grid-connection substation packages get specified.
Saudi Energy awarded Haif Company the replacement of Tabuk substation 2 in north-western KSA — a new 132/33/13.8 kV substation with GIS, transformers, switchgear, capacitor banks, MV/LV cable systems and protection — after a ten-way bid last December (Al-Babtain, Alfanar, Al-Gihaz, Al-Osais, Danway, Haif, Mohammed Al-Ojaimi, Nesma I&T, Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic Works, Tareg Al-Jaafari). Haif also took a 132/33 kV substation at Hail to integrate the Al-Kahfah photovoltaic plant; MEED prices the pair at about $90m. Separately Trading & Development Partnership will build a 132/33 kV substation at Al-Jouf delivering ~168 MVA to the Al-Busitaa agricultural site under the Liquid Fuel Displacement Programme. MEED Projects counts almost $2.3bn of Saudi Energy work under bid evaluation, including a ~466 km 500 kV overhead line in the Eastern Province due to award later in 2026.

Europe (TSO orders)
The first green hydrogen produced at RWE’s Lingen electrolysis plant has reached Evonik’s Marl Chemical Park through a 120 km pipeline network operated by Nowega, OGE and SYNEQT. RWE Generation CEO Nikolaus Valerius said the company is ‘moving ahead quickly towards the full commissioning of our electrolysers’ and will prepare the plants for commercial operation over the coming months; OGE confirmed its first hydrogen pipelines are now in network operation, testing grid access, capacity booking and balancing under real conditions. The hydrogen meets EU RFNBO criteria, so offtakers can book it against their own decarbonisation targets. Europe’s largest electrolyser complex crossing from construction into operation is the clearest signal yet that the rectifier-transformer and grid-connection fleet behind electrolysis is entering a service-and-spares phase rather than a build phase.
e-distribuzione, the Enel Group DSO running Italy's national distribution network (~1.1m km, 30m+ delivery points), awarded Hitachi Energy Italy five contracts for the supply AND installation of high-voltage to medium-voltage transformers, concluded Jan–Feb 2026 under an EU Utilities Directive negotiated procedure and published 4 Aug 2026. Total programme ≈ €181.76m; Hitachi Energy Italy's attributed tender value €84.18m. Scope covers the transformer units plus installation, electrical and commissioning work. Getra Power, MATELEC, Siemens Energy Transformers and S.E.A. also bid — a rare public read on who competes for large Italian utility transformer work, and confirmation that European DSO primary-substation renewal is now being let as supply-plus-install packages rather than bare equipment.
In its Q3 FY2026 release (5 Aug 2026) Siemens Energy reported a record €51bn Grid Technologies order backlog, with segment orders up 28% y/y to €5.4bn — large power transformers drove most of the gain and US data-centre demand held steady. Book-to-bill ran 1.48, i.e. bookings still far ahead of shipments; segment margin guidance was raised to 18–20% on 25–27% comparable revenue growth. Group orders hit a record €17.9bn and total company backlog €162bn. Critically, the planned +50% transformer and GIS capacity does not land until 2030. For suppliers: the queue at one of the big three is now four years deep — lead-time pressure on primary transformers is structural, not cyclical, and every month it persists pushes GCC utilities harder toward refurbishment, rewind and life-extension work.
Der Verteilnetzbetreiber Mitnetz Strom investiert 2026 rund 119 Mio. € in Brandenburg. Größtes Projekt ist der Ersatzneubau des Umspannwerks Ragow (23 Mio. € gesamt, 9,1 Mio. € in 2026): dort entsteht ein vierter 380/110-kV-Transformator und die 110-kV-Schaltanlage wird zur Dreisammelschienenanlage ausgebaut — Hauptbau seit Juli 2026, Fertigstellung 2029. Neubau Umspannwerk Grano ~9 Mio. € (6,5 Mio. € in 2026, Inbetriebnahme Frühjahr 2027); Erneuerung/Erweiterung Neuendorf 24,2 Mio. €. Read-across: German DSO substation renewal is now a steady, budgeted transformer and insulation-kit demand stream, and Ragow is being rebuilt under live network operation — the retrofit/refurbishment pattern suppliers sell into.
BRUSH Group has bought D K Moriarty Ltd, a family-owned Colchester manufacturer of current transformers, voltage transformers and bespoke instrument-transformer solutions, founded 1968 with ~50 staff. BRUSH CEO Nicolas Pitrat framed it as securing control of a critical part of its own supply chain, shortening lead times and widening manufacturing capacity; the Colchester site continues unchanged. Read-across: European switchgear and transformer OEMs are now buying their component suppliers outright rather than tendering them — the same vertical-integration reflex seen at Girişim/Europower in Türkiye.
TenneT’s H1 2026 grid capex reached €6.023bn versus €5.504bn in H1 2025. In the Netherlands the Zuidplaspolder substation near Rotterdam entered service, Maasvlakte work continued for three new offshore wind farms and the next phase of the Rilland–Tilburg HV link began. In Germany construction started on HeideHub (DC/AC integration) and on the Sengwarden energy hub, which will land 4 GW of offshore wind. TenneT again flagged permitting and land constraints as the binding schedule risk — not equipment. Europe’s single largest transformer and reactor buyer keeps accelerating.
EBRD (€120m), IFC (€120m), PBZ (€40m) and ZABA (€40m) plus €50m of own funds back capacity expansion for transformers, switchgear and grid equipment — part of a €550m three-year cycle; total planned investment including the Siemens Energy power-transformer JV exceeds €800m. The Inelfe Biscay Gulf link lifts Spain–France exchange capacity from 2,800 to 5,000 MW; converter-transformer logistics on this scale are a useful benchmark for GCC EHV project planning.
BRUSH Group has bought D K Moriarty Ltd (Colchester, founded 1968, ~50 staff), a specialist current- and voltage-transformer maker for distribution/switchgear applications. BRUSH CEO Nicolas Pitrat cited securing control of a critical supply component, shortening lead times and widening manufacturing capacity — a read-across to vertical integration reflexes seen across European grid-equipment OEMs as lead times extend (Girişim, Europower in Türkiye). Read-across: instrument transformer availability is now a stated constraint on switchgear and substation EPC delivery windows.
HOPS signed off the transmission blueprint — a new 400 kV substation plus ~280 km of new lines, >$500m of transmission investment — for Pantheon Atlas’ 1 GW data-centre campus. USA (shortage · lead times)
Consolidated Edison told the market alongside its Q2 results that it will now place 28 new substations in service by 2035 across CECONY and Orange & Rockland — six more than the 22 it guided to earlier this year — as part of roughly $37.2bn of planned distribution-network investment serving more than nine million people across New York City, four downstate counties and three northern New Jersey counties. Q2 combined electricity sales revenue passed $3.1bn against $2.78bn a year earlier. Read as a demand signal: a single US utility adding six substations to an already-committed programme is six more sets of power transformers, bushings, tap-changers and insulation systems entering a market where lead times already run three to four years — the structural tightness that keeps pushing US and European buyers toward any supplier with available slots.
Under the partnership announced 5 Aug 2026, Texas Transformers & Equipment supplies pad-mounted transformer and substation units while Emerald Transformer performs final assembly in the US — final processing, tanking, oil filling, wiring, electrical testing and shipment — plus commissioning support and field technical services, backed by a five-year warranty, aimed at rapidly expanding data-centre projects. Another domestic-assembly workaround to the 128-week US power-transformer lead time.
Edison Electric Institute figures point to roughly $1.1tn of US utility grid spend over the next five years, $208bn in 2025, directed at transmission expansion, substation upgrades, grid automation and distribution modernisation. Transformer Magazine’s read is blunt: the money does not remove the near-term constraint — lead times stretched because demand outran manufacturing capacity, and a bigger programme does not shorten a queue. Grid-capacity availability is now itself a siting criterion for data centres and industrial campuses.
First Korean power-equipment maker to reach 1,000 cumulative units at a US site (~200 GVA combined); the milestone unit is a 500 kV / 675 MVA UHV transformer for Georgia Transmission Corp. Annual capacity now 105 units, and HD Hyundai’s US share of ≥100 MVA UHV transformers rose from 17.2% (2024) to 25.7% (2025). The second Alabama plant, under construction for April 2027, adds ~50% more capacity up to 765 kV — Korean makers are converting the US shortage into durable share.
A fresh NLR report on the ageing US hydropower fleet (average plant ~80 years old) puts new LPT procurement at 30–36 months against 12–18 months historically, with extra-high-voltage units taking up to 60 months; transformer prices ran 50–70% higher in 2025 than 2019. More than 80% of US LPT demand is met by imports, and domestic output is constrained by grain-oriented electrical steel plus conductors, tap changers, bushings AND INSULATION MATERIALS — the report names the insulation chain explicitly. Delta Star, Hitachi Energy and Pennsylvania Transformer are expanding US capacity, Siemens Energy is planning new production, but grid-modernisation and data-centre demand keeps outrunning supply. Read-across for suppliers: when insulation is a named bottleneck in the world's tightest market, GCC OEM buyers will pay for security of supply rather than lowest unit price.
MCG (18+ US plants; switchgear, e-houses and power skids for data centres) brings engineered-to-order transformer capacity in-house to cut speed-to-power. CORE holds 1,000+ units in ready-to-ship inventory, access to 5.5m sq ft of production and quotes custom delivery in as little as 16 weeks; closing expected within 30 days. Vertical integration is now the standard answer to US lead times.
A ~55-ton transformer was hauled ~500 miles from Roanoke, Virginia over five days for the Illuminating Company, with a mobile substation keeping ~11,000 Lakewood/West Cleveland customers supplied during construction. First unit energises later in 2026, the second in early 2027 — a clean datapoint on all-in US replacement economics and on mobile-substation dependence during outages.
~370,545 lb unit moved 1,375 miles by rail — fourth identical LPT for the same campus; sustained data-centre-driven large-power-transformer demand now being met by US domestic makers.

Energy Dominance Financing loan (announced 8 Jul) backs ~100 transmission projects/upgrades spanning ~2,800 miles incl. reconductoring and new lines; AEP Texas has agreements supporting up to 41 GW of potential new load through 2030 (data centres, Permian) — more funded US transmission means more transformer purchase orders into an already tight market.
New units at Sabana Llana (Carolina), Crea (Bayamón) and Mora (Isabela) substations serve ~782,500 customers, funded via DOE/FEMA; LUMA notes utilities must now order transformers years in advance — a live example of US lead-time reality.
AP/Reuters (9 Jul 2026): US utilities and data-centre developers are competing for scarce transformers, turbines and switchgear as AI-driven load outpaces reshored supply; GSU transformer lead times passed 160 weeks in Q1 2026 (vs ~143 in 2024) and large-power-transformer waits now run 3–5 years, lifting equipment prices an expected ~4–10% over the next year — the import/allocation window for non-US suppliers with capacity stays wide open.
Hitachi Energy's $457m Virginia plant — billed as the largest power transformer factory in the US — targets AI/data-centre-driven grid demand, part of its >$1bn US grid-manufacturing package; online 2028.

Despite ~$2bn directed toward North American transformer production expansion (new capacity online by 2028), backlogs for transformers and breakers persist as demand keeps outpacing reshored supply — the import window for non-US suppliers stays open.
Actual order data shows 128-week (≈2.5 yr) waits before a unit ships; high-capacity power transformers stretching to 4 years.
Imports cover ~80% of US power transformer supply and 50% of distribution supply — structural domestic production gap.
Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy and others expanding, but new capacity won't relieve the current shortage before 2028.
Utilities and developers competing for import allocations and production slots as domestic order books fill — opportunity window for non-US suppliers with capacity.
More than 50% of US data centers planned for 2026 expected delayed or cancelled for lack of step-down transformers and electrical gear.
