Power (transmission) transformers are large, high-voltage units (typically above ~10 MVA) that connect networks and step voltage between transmission voltage classes. Distribution transformers are smaller (typically ~25 kVA to a few MVA) and step the voltage down for end-use, optimised for efficiency at low load and for being scattered close to consumers.

What is the difference between a power transformer and a distribution transformer?

By rating and role

Power transformers sit at generating stations and grid substations, handling bulk power at high voltage (e.g. 110, 220, 400 kV) with high short-circuit strength and impedance control. Distribution transformers step down to utilization or distribution voltages (e.g. 11/0.4 kV, 33/11 kV) and are sized for a small number of customers.

Typical physical differences

Distribution transformers are usually smaller, oil- or dry-type, pole- or pad-mounted, with simple tap ranges and lower losses at light load. Power transformers often have on-load tap changers, larger insulation margins, specialised cooling (see ONAN vs ONAF), and higher impedance so that fault currents are limited.

Efficiency and loading

Distribution transformers are selected to operate efficiently across a broad load profile with a strong light-load (no-load) loss focus. Power transformers are optimised for continuous high loading and overall system economics, and are usually only lightly overloaded within designed limits.
