Quick answer — A correct oil sample is taken from a clean, dry, sample valve after flushing, into a clean, dry, appropriate container (or gas-tight syringe for DGA), without letting moisture or air in, and at a representative operating condition. The sample is labelled and sent to a lab for the DGA, BDV, moisture and acidity tests. A clean, controlled sample prevents a false result.

How is a transformer oil sample taken?

Prepare and flush

Use a clean, dry container, flush the sample valve with the oil, and take the sample into the vial without air or moisture.

Control the conditions

Sample at a representative temperature and avoid a sample that is contaminated by rain, dirt or a stale line.

Label and ship

Label the sample with the unit and date, and send it promptly to the lab, since gas can escape or the oil can age if it sits.
