What the numbers mean

The class gives the maximum permissible hottest-spot temperature for a given insulation material set. Operating at or below it supports a long design life; exceeding it roughly halves the life for each extra 6–10 °C.

Transformer use

Oil-immersed transformers are commonly class A (cellulose/oil, 105 °C). Dry-type and cast-resin transformers use higher classes (B, F, H) with materials like epoxy, aramid or polyester.

Relation to cooling and loading

The insulation class interacts with the cooling design and the loading rules: a unit can be overloaded only for a limited time before the hottest-spot temperature exceeds the class limit.
